Non-Negotiable Principles of 100 Personal Trainers

Focusing on your daily routine

When a personal trainer speaks about their "non-negotiables," they are referring to essential principles, practices, or boundaries that they firmly adhere to and are unwilling to compromise on.

I asked 100 trainers about their non-negotiables, and their responses shed light on the fundamental principles they prioritise in their fitness approaches. Here are the results I collected:

1. Hydration is Key: They encourage their clients to prioritise hydration throughout the day. They stress the importance of water intake not just during workouts, but also in their daily lives by explaining how proper hydration supports energy levels, aids digestion, and improves overall performance during exercise sessions.

2. Embrace Nutrient-Rich Foods: They guide clients to focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods that fuel their bodies for optimal performance and recovery. They teach them about the importance of balanced meals that include lean proteins, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of fruits and vegetables by emphasising how proper nutrition supports muscle growth, boosts metabolism, and enhances overall well-being.

3. Aim for Daily Movement: They highlight the significance of incorporating movement into daily routines beyond structured workouts. Encouraging clients to aim for at least 10,000 steps a day by walking, taking the stairs, or engaging in recreational sports. They also speak about the benefits of consistent movement for cardiovascular health, weight management, and stress reduction.

4. Consistent Exercise Routine: They stress the importance of consistency in exercise habits for long-term success. Working with clients to develop personalised workout plans that fit their goals, preferences, and lifestyles. They consistently remind them about the importance of sticking to a regular exercise schedule to build strength, improve endurance, and achieve desired results.

5. Nature's Therapy and Outdoor Activity: They encourage clients to take advantage of the mental and emotional benefits of spending time outdoors hiking, biking, or simply going for a walk. They also highlight how being in nature can reduce stress, boost mood, and enhance overall well-being, making exercise more enjoyable and sustainable for clients.

Three Overlooked Principles Personal Trainers Can Consider

Weekly exercise plan

1. Inspire Daily: Take a cue from Okeil's (https://www.instagram.com/okeil111/) inspiring approach. He suggests motivating at least one person daily within your circle. Whether it's a positive post on social media, a supportive message to a client, or words of encouragement to a colleague, spreading motivation not only helps others but also builds your reputation as a supportive fitness professional.

2. Cook at Home: Shakespeare Fitness (https://www.instagram.com/shakespearesfitness/) advocates for more home-cooked meals, a practice I'll be adopting too 😊. Educate clients about the benefits of cooking at home, like having control over ingredients and portion sizes. By focusing on whole, unprocessed foods, clients can support their fitness goals and overall health.

3. Embrace Recovery: Another important aspect often overlooked is prioritising recovery. Encourage clients to incorporate rest days, ample sleep, and relaxation techniques like stretching or yoga into their routines. Proper recovery aids in muscle repair, reduces injury risk, and boosts overall performance, making it essential for long-term fitness success.
